Right from late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the British had begun to make friendship with the ruling houses of Rajasthan. In 1818, a treaty of alliance was signed between the British East India Company and Maharaja Surat Singh of Bikaner. Ever Since then there have been increasing western cultural influences on the life-style of the house of Bikaner. Glass and cut-glass vases, lamps and writing table paraphernalia displayed here originate from this cultural exchange.
