Before the introduction of Horse driven carriages of colonial period in most regions of India carriage were drawn by bullocks. in the desert areas, however camel and camel pulled transportation was common.

Raths or bullock driven chariots shown here come from an aristocratic background and therefore are embellished with brass and silver decoration parts. The chariots also have a sophisticated system of springs and jumpers which absorb shocks on rough Indian rural roads.

Such carriages were pulled by bullocks who too were adorned with elaborate and craft Intensive decoration and caparisons examples of which can be seen here.

The Raths displayed here come from the Marwar region and belong to early 20th century. The bullock comparison are from mid 20th Century.
